‘Women invite rape’ is a common phrase coined by men in today’s patriarchal society. It is a very common belief that wearing short dresses invites rape. Women supposedly ‘excite’ men when they don ‘short clothes’. A deeper look into this fact actually tells us that even women in sarees are raped. It is hence proved that it is the cast of mind of men that is toxic.
The fact that women ‘invite’ rape comes upon as a shock to people as even a six month old infant gets raped in our nation. So does the little toddler excite men? A seventy year old granny gets raped in our country. Does she really have the energy or the zeal to ‘excite’ men?
Girls are advised to stay at home after it gets dark, so that she could remain safe in the comfort of her home. Then, the chances of her getting raped is believed to be less. This so-called stereotype is also false, since women get molested even at home. Yes, in the ‘comfort’ of their very home and it is her own family that is responsible.
So where on earth do we guarantee women a safe place? The answer is obviously, nowhere.
